Conversational Speech Sampling in the Assessment of Articulation Proficiency

Lane S. Schmitt
Beth H. Howard

John F. Schmitt

The study was designed to collect preliminary data on Whole Word Accuracy (WWA), which is a method for assessing articulation proficiency in conversation. WWA scores and Arizona Articulation Proficiency Scale (AAPS) scores were computed and then correlated for 30 subjects in each of eight age groups from 3 through 7 years. Developmental trends similar to those previously established for the AAPS were observed for WWA scores. The potential value of comparing WWA scores of children with articulation disorders with WWA scores of normally speaking peers during assessment is suggested.
