Background and History

Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (LSHSS), first published in 1970, is published quarterly in January, April, July, and October by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It is an archival journal for research and practice in educational settings. LSHSS publishes studies and articles that pertain to speech, language, and hearing disorders and differences in children and adolescents, as well as to professional issues affecting service delivery in educational settings. Contributions appear under the following headings: articles, reports, clinical exchange, clinical forum, software perspectives, letter to the editor, and supplements.

Circulation

As of June 2008, the circulation for LSHSS was 52,340. Beginning January 1, 2010, all ASHA journals will be online-only. FAQs for ASHA members are now available.

Impact Factor

The 2008 impact factor is 1.210. The rank in the Linguistics category is 21 of 68 titles. The rank in the Rehabilitation category is 18 of 51 titles.

Editors Awards

An Editor’s Award is presented yearly to the LSHSS editor's choice of the most meritorious single article appearing in the journal during the preceding calendar year. A compilation [PDF] of all awardees since 1970 for all the ASHA journals is now available.

Summary Publication Statistics for 2005-2007

Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (LSHSS) annually publishes summary statistics of acceptance/rejection rates and manuscript processing times. These summary statistics provide data on acceptance/rejection rates, frequently used by tenure/promotion committees, as well as average manuscript processing times, often of interest to contributing authors.

Tables 1 and 2 show the rates of acceptance and rejection for manuscripts receiving a final decision in 2005 through 2007, regardless of the year the manuscript was submitted originally. Accepted manuscripts are those for which a final decision to accept has been made. Rejected manuscripts are those judged unsuitable for publication and for which no further revision or resubmission has been requested.

Figure 1 presents data for manuscripts that had completed the review process as of year end 2007. The submission-to-decision interval is calculated from the date the editor’s office receives the new or revised manuscript to the date a decision is made on the manuscript.
